Hello friends in life and art,
PersonalNo news! I fall asleep in class...
It's late fall. I'm preparing to hibernate, it may appear.
Journalistic InterestOne of the most important sources of educated opinions on photojournalism on the internet,
The Digital Journalist (
[link]), has been befallen with the same evil it up to now only had to report upon: In the wake of the financial crisis a lot of newspapers and magazines
cut back heavily on their
photojournalism departments, or close down completely. Now, due to the plummeting revenues in the sector,
Canon - up to now a steady supporter - had to draw its
financial support of TDJ away, says editor
Dirck Halstead in his "Important letter to the viewers of The Digital Journalist". Calling upon the readers of TDJ he asks to
pledge money for enabling TDJ to keep on running.
"If enough people do, we may be able to keep The Digital Journalist -- and visual journalism -- alive. Consider it as an investment in yourself, and the future." Read Dirck's
letter here: [link]Have you ever asked you, looking at old
black and white images from your
grandparent's youth, what the world must have looked like back then...
in colour? Prepare to now have a glimpse at those colours, coming to us from the
1940s. Be aware that all of those people who suddenly look so
alive and colourful (oh yes!), today either are
our old parents and grandparents or even grandgrandparents - or are long gone already. I admit to first having tears in my eyes when I saw these photos.
Time goes so fast... [link]
General PhotographyLiving in a
big city? Or ever seen one from above? Doesn't it sometimes just look like
heap of grawling ants in human form? See
New York City in exactly this way, without having to spend your night
philosophizing (and drinking away) in a bar just to end up standing, dazed and elated,
on top of one of the
city's skyscrapers just as the sun rises, making everything seem so
chaotic, random, puppet-house-like. Welcome to the
world of human ants...
[link]Now what? You want a
tilt-shift lens as well? If you have the
cash to splash out and are happy to own a
marvel of optical handycraft, go for it. Yet for those of you who (yes yes, I know, photography is an expensive hobby) are always
short on cash, you might want to try your hand on this
do-it-yourself tilt-shift lens:
